If you are a tennis fan, you would have watched the marathon court action between Nadal and Federer in the Wimbledon Final. Independent of who you were cheering for, you would have enjoyed this amazing match between two masters. Both were pushed to their limits and displayed amazing skill and resilience. As professionals in their chosen field, both were “Match Ready” when the final started.

I heard this expression, “Match Ready” from our newsletter editor Tom Scollon in a talk he gave. He likened a trader to a tennis player and discussed the importance of being match ready (trade-ready). Amateurs or those who treat trading as a hobby would be rather unpredictable and haphazard in their trading activities. They would examine the markets here or there, decide to take a trade or not based on some indicator they are trying or their gut feel, take a break for a few days or weeks, come back with a fury and take several trades.

Imagine a professional tennis player. Would they or could they play tennis here and there, decide to practice based on their gut feel, try a new technique, take a break for a few days or weeks, come back with a fury and play several games? Could they afford to be unpredictable and haphazard in their approach to tennis?

Professionals are ready to step on the court any day, any moment and when required. Professional traders are ready to step in and take a trade any day, any moment as their systems indicate. That is what being “Match Ready” is all about.

Like a professional tennis player, a trader would constantly practice and find ways of improving themselves. They would know all the rules, their weaknesses and strengths, their opponent’s weaknesses and strengths. Same applies to a professional trader. They have trading systems in place, regular routines to analyse the markets and test their systems. They have clearly defined rules to enter and exit trades.

“Match ready” does not mean the player is in a match all the time. They are ready to step on the court any time. “Trade ready” does not mean you are in a trade all the time, but you are ready to take a trade any time.

Another aspect of being “Match Ready” is loving the game. Professional tennis players do not step on court saying: “Here we go, another match. I do not know if I am going to win. I wish the match was next week” They are keen and eager to take centre court and give the match their all. Trade ready professionals love what they do. They are keen and eager to jump on a trade when called for and they give each trade all their skill and experience.

Are you ready for the match? Are you ready for the trade?

Believe, achieve
